I had the privilege of attending the Lunch & Learn: “Disciplined Disruption: A Nonviolent Response to Injustice” at The King Center in Atlanta. Facilitated by Vonnetta L. West and Bonita Hampton Smith, with inspiring remarks from Dr. Bernice A. King, the experience was much more than a workshop—it was an opportunity to reflect, listen, and learn how each of us can respond to injustice through the Six Principles and Six Steps of Kingian Nonviolence.
Throughout the session, we participated in hands-on exercises that placed us in realistic, field-based scenarios where we had to think critically about how to respond with discipline instead of emotion. We worked together to create posters that expressed our commitment to becoming “Disciplined Disruptors,” shared our perspectives with one another, and observed a powerful moment of silence that reminded us of the responsibility we all have to pursue justice with courage, compassion, and purpose. The experience reinforced that meaningful change begins with intentional action and a commitment to seeing the humanity in every person.
When it came time to describe myself, I chose the words “Extreme Disciplined-Reactive Disruptor.” Those words reflect not only who I strive to be but also the mission behind the work my team and I are building. We created GoVia, a platform designed to modernize police encounters by helping citizens and law enforcement navigate interactions more safely through technology that supports transparency, accountability, and de-escalation. Sitting in that room, I realized our mission aligns with Dr. King’s vision that lasting change comes through disciplined, nonviolent action—not simply reacting to problems, but creating solutions that transform them.
I left The King Center encouraged, challenged, and inspired. The lessons of nonviolence are not confined to history—they are a blueprint for innovation, leadership, public safety, and building stronger communities today. My sincere thanks to The King Center, Dr. Bernice A. King, Vonnetta L. West, Bonita Hampton Smith, and everyone who participated in creating such a meaningful experience. The work continues.
